On June 8, 2011, the Rochester Memorial School community participated in the inaugural “Miles for Memorial School Kid’s Fitness Challenge”. This daylong, community service event promoted the health and wellness of RMS students while providing a grassroots fundraising effort in support of fitness and fun!
The Rochester Memorial School and its students are currently without a completed playground due to the recently completed building expansion and renovation. Recess and play areas have largely been reduced to asphalt blacktop while grass is continuing to grow. In the meantime, the RMS community has been forced to think creatively about how to provide alternative fitness opportunities to students.
The “Miles for Memorial School Kid’s Fitness Challenge” addressed two important school community needs…fitness and finances. Beginning in the morning, all students engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity as they were challenged to complete the 2-mile loop of rural roadways that surround their school. RMS students and staff walked, jogged, and ran in achievement of their personal mileage goals. Prior to the day’s events, students created personal and/or group fitness goals. In support of these goals, students were provided an opportunity to solicit financial donations from sponsors. The money raised by students will be used to support the construction of their new playground, along with updating physical education and recess equipment. The Massachusetts School Building Authority will not reimburse costs associated with these items, so community members are taking action…literally!
Traditionally, June is a time of year when students across the South Coast are participating in typical “Field Day” events. At Rochester Memorial School, the fun helped support the health and wellness of current students, and will provide community play and fitness opportunities for years to come!
Planning for the community service event was a joint effort that included Rochester teachers, school administrators, parents, and both the Rochester Police and Highway Departments. The “Miles for Memorial School Kid’s Fitness Challenge” partnered with global fitness brand, Reebok, to provide reusable water bottles to all RMS students. Also, the Rochester Police Brotherhood generously donated $250 to offset costs associated with organizing the event, and the Rochester Memorial teaching and administrative staff donated some great raffle prizes that supported student fitness goals achievement and continued healthy habits.
This event helped raise nearly $12,000! We are looking forward to continued growth of this event in its second year, and are eager to hear ideas for expansion and improvement upon our successes!
